A TRUE LEGEND:
THE STORY OF eddie aikau-A LEADER FOR THE AGES
In 1978, the Polynesian Voyaging Society sought volunteers for a daring 30-day, 2,500-mile journey to re-enact the ancient Polynesian migration route between Hawaii and Tahiti.
Among the crew was Eddie Aikau—a legendary surfer, waterman, and lifeguard. Just twelve miles offshore, the double-hulled canoe, Hokule’a, began to leak, leaving the crew stranded. In a courageous attempt to seek help, Aikau famously grabbed his surfboard and simply said, “I’ll go.”
Tragically, Eddie’s body was never found, sparking the largest air-sea search in Hawaiian history. The crew was eventually rescued, but Eddie Aikau became a true Hawaiian hero and legend for his willingness to challenge the status quo and help others.
Across Hawaii, bumper stickers and T-shirts honor his spirit with the simple phrase, “Eddie Would Go.”​
